John W. Popp, Jr., M.D., graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1969 and completed medical school at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1973. Following internal medicine residency and chief residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, he completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Massachusetts General Hospital.  
Dr. Popp then joined a private practice in Columbia, South Carolina where he also maintained a position as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of South Carolina and chaired the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition.  He has had an interest in inflammatory bowel disease since his training and has participated in numerous clinical trials evaluating novel therapies for IBD. 
Dr. Popp has been active in the American College of Gastroenterology having served as President of the organization in 2004-2005. He continues to serve the College as a liaison to the Board of Trustees. He retired from private practice in June of 2006 and joined Centocor as a Medical Director in the Medical Affairs Department In July of 2006.  
Dr. Popp continues to have an intense interest in colorectal cancer prevention and has visited Congress on numerous occasions to inform our legislators of the importance of preventative strategies. He serves on the Board of Directors for AmSurg Corporation and also is the medical advisor for the Stop Colon Cancer Now campaign.
