Endoscopy Center to Promote Colon Cancer Screening at Get Your Rear in Gear
San Antonio center sets goal to schedule 50 new screenings at race
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 17, 2011) –  StopColonCancerNow.com and the San Antonio Gastronenterology Endoscopy Centers hope to schedule 50 new colonoscopy screenings at next week’s Get Your Rear in Gear, a 5K and 10K run/walk that focuses on raising awareness about colon cancer. On Sunday, March 27, physicians from the centers will be on hand throughout the race at the StopColonCancerNow.com tent to provide information and answer questions on colon cancer prevention and screenings.

StopColonCancerNow.com sponsors Get Your Rear in Gear races and other events throughout the country as part of its mission to increase colon cancer screenings and save lives. The San Antonio Gastroenterology Endoscopy Center and San Antonio Gastroenterology Center North are local partners of StopColonCancerNow.com and will also field a team at Saturday’s race.

“Colon cancer is the second deadliest form of cancer in the United States and 80 percent of colon cancer patients have no prior family history, so it’s essential for people over 50 to get screened regularly,” said Dr. Jeff Bullock, San Antonio Gastroenterology Associates, P.A. “We’re proud to have a presence at GYRIG and we invite others to join us at the event, which is a great vehicle for educating the public about this disease.”

When colon cancer is detected and treated in the earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent.  Patients are encouraged to get a screening if they are at least 50 years old (45 for African-Americans) or have a family history of colon cancer or polyps.  Even though colon cancer is 80 percent preventable with timely screenings, almost half of at-risk Texas are not getting screened. To improve that statistic, physicians and representatives from the San Antonio Gastroenterology Endoscopy Centers will be encouraging at risk individuals who have not been screened to schedule their screening at the race.

The San Antonio Get Your Rear in Gear will feature both a Kids’ Fun Run at 8:00 a.m. followed by the 5K and 10K beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Participants are encouraged to register online at www.getyourrearingear.com before the race, which will be held March 27 at McAllister Park, Pavillion #2 in San Antonio.
