I am a colon cancer survivor. Recently diagnosed in October 2009, I had stage I colon cancer with the affected portion of my colon removed on November 9, 2009. All lymph nodes checked were clear and I needed no additional treatment or radiation. Our family has a history of colon polyps beginning with my father who had thousands of them. He lost most of his colon as a preventative measure several years before he died of heart disease. My youngest brother was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 49, lost all of his colon, but survives five years after its removal. My cancer was diagnosed during a follow-up colonoscopy after the initial one three years prior. I cannot say enough about the benefits of screening for this deadly disease and have encouraged all of my siblings and their children to take the necessary precautions against it. In the Black community, convincing male family members is the most difficult. I have two nephews with colon polyps who fail to have their follow-up exams as they should. One has had colon polyps since he was a baby and presented with bloody stools. Family history plus personal choices are important risk factors that all should be aware of if colon cancer is to be eradicated.

I was 27 and went to the ER with abdominal pain. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. After 4 days in the hospital, I had to get a colonoscopy. I was really nervous but I really wanted to go home. I was the youngest patient in the office and I had everyone laughing becuase I wore my crazy socks :) It was not bad at all. But they found quite a bit of polyps that were too large to remove at the time. I had to return for colon surgery. They were precancerous. I was told if I did not have this done, I would not have lived to see 35. I have the test done once a year and actually get excited about it. The prep is nothing (they find new ways to make it easier by the year) and the actual colonoscopy takes 10-15 minutes. I am 32, and female, and this does not run in my family. So if you read this, and you're most likely older then me, it saved my life. I have 2 kids that need me...to be afraid of a simple test that clearly can save your life, is just not an option. Get sreened!!!! <3

Hello, this letter is to let everyone know about the necessity for a colonoscopy. I had been ill
for eleven years. My occupational physician did a test that showed high inflamation in my
intestants. Another doctor sent me for a colonoscopy. I had pre cancer, a polyp that was
the type to form into cancer. I found it early and got it out. Thanks to these two physicians and
common sense, I got the proper treatment in time. Colon cancer does give any symptoms at
first. Do not wait, get that colonsocopy. The hardest part is the preparation for the test. But
is it worth it, you bet, it was for me. I am 54 years of age. Please, take the time to get this
important test done.

As a female , I was in denial starting at at 45, finally 3 months before my 47th birthday ,I begged my doctor for a colonoscopy. I stayed awake long enough to see the tumor, and was so glad. I had the resction and hysterectomy/appendectomy, followed by chemo and radiarion. I was cancer free for 5 years. Dec 08, heaviness in the chest, x-ray confimed the cancer had done a litle traveling, and was in my left lung. Extreme Radition for 8 weeks every day. Lots of sleep to be had. Clean again by June. Late October 09, Left side vocal chords paralyzed, endoscopy found a small cancer in my stomach, CT showed another spot in the left lung again. How does this stuff travel so quickly. It is an amazing journey, thanks to family and friends, It is so much easier to face.
